What makes a business “fit”? The way business owners assess fitness can vary widely, even within the same vertical. Some measure relative to a baseline year, some relative to short-term or long-term targets, some relative to industry peers. We’ve got an exciting webinar coming up on this same topic, so stay tuned!
According to author and thought leader Pamela Meyer, business fitness comprises five dimensions. How you measure these necessary components is up to you; what matters is that you achieve all five. These dimensions come together to help you create a fit business that is able to compete and thrive in a complex, dynamic market.
Strength
Strength, the foundation of business fitness, comes from building and sticking to a sustainable routine. This isn’t something that happens by accident! A strong business is one that builds on its core competencies and its vision, mission, and values.
Flexibility
As with physical fitness, strength and flexibility are interconnected. They enhance each other. A flexible business is one that is able to use its strengths to effectively adapt and respond to challenges and opportunities.
Balance
Balance refers to how well you maintain focus and stability, and how quickly you recover when they are disrupted. A balanced business isn’t necessarily one that never loses equilibrium, but one that has mastered the art of regaining it.
Speed and Mobility
Speed and mobility comprise a business’ responsiveness, competitiveness, and innovation. All this is founded on readiness. A mobile, high-speed business is one that is poised to respond quickly to crises, new opportunities, and shifts in the market.
Endurance
Endurance is a business’ ability to use past information and experiences to push beyond previous limits. A hardy business is one that forges ahead despite challenges and obstacles, but also knows to reassess its values and goals when pushing on would be too risky.
